Batting cages and pop-up nets are two pieces of safety equipment used for softball hitting instruction. Hitting cages are generally fixed structures used with softball pitching machine. They are generally long and narrow with netting around the outside, the pitching machine set up from the proper distant to the plate, with a pitching screen set up to protect the person feeding the pitching machine. This set up is generally used for practice, be it indoor or outdoor, when the team is working on particular phases of hitting.
The pop-up net is generally used with the batting tee. It can be used with regular softballs, wiffle balls, or other practice balls, depending on the hitting drill. You will frequently see the pop-up nets used at tournaments or before games to prepare the team to play. They generally collapse into a flat circle.
