catching helmet

Daughter high school catcher sustained concussion from foul ball into mask. need to replace helmet. What is the opinion regarding best helmet out there? Admit to being somewhat suspicious of manufacturer claims, would like real input from coaches with experience who have no ax to grind or equipment to sell. What's the difference between a college style helmet and high school.

Catcher's Helmet & Concussions
by: Coach Dan

Suzanne,

This is an excellent question. I decided to reach out to a Twitter friend, Bryan Ingalls, who has been a catcher for a number of years and plays Men's Fastpitch. Bryan is also currently the coach at SUNY Canton.

Bryan says the hockey style catcher's helmet for sure. He wasn't sure about the manufacturer, but he uses Rawlings and he bought Worth for his players. They are both from the same manufacturer. After having a few concussions with other helmet styles, he feels most comfortable with the hockey style helmet.

Concussions and head injuries are not something to mess around with and it is good to see that various athletic leagues, high schools, colleges and professional sprots are taking head injuries quite seriously. At my daughter's high school, all athletes are required to take an ImPACT test. She took it prior to the soccer season in the Fall. As she just sustained a head injury, with all the symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome, she will not be permitted to step back on the field until she passes the test. Ironically, she passed all of the usual "follow my hand and pupil" test, but the headaches and exhaustion are evident. And of all things, she did it while sliding into second when the shortstop caught her under the facemask on the batter's helmet, driving it up between the teeth and inside of her lip, requiring three stitches. The whiplash caused the resultant head injury.
