Women's Fastpitch Softball Association

Editor’s Note The Women’s Fastpitch Softball Association is filling a huge void in organized fastpitch softball. Up until now, the only game in town was either the co-ed slow pitch leagues or a few 23U teams that played minimal games once you broke the age limit on 18U. I was made aware by Kali Capps that in 2010, that had all changed. She contacted me on Twitter and asked if I would be interested in getting the word out. Thinking back to all of those teary eyes of some of the best players (and people) I ever had the good fortune to be associated with when they realized their last 18U game was in the books, how could I say no to Kali? Below is Kali’s account of this new league. So if you are too old for 18U, you’re just right for the Women’s Fastpitch Softball Association. So dig out your fastpitch softball cleats, glove and bat, pull on those fastpitch softball uniforms and let’s go play! Better yet, let’s play two!

Women's Fastpitch Softball Association launched its leagues nationwide in the spring of 2010. The WFSA, a division of the National Adult Baseball Association, is recognized as an adult alternative to women’s slow-pitch softball. The goal is to have a nationally based league of cities playing softball under a common set of rules, with the emphasis on competition and fun.

Competition and fun is exactly what is happening in the Inland Empire during their inaugural season. With ages spanning from 18 – 50something years old, the 1st WFSA league in the state of California has gotten the ball rolling for surrounding areas to jump on the bandwagon.

Orange County is beginning their first season of play in April 2011; just a week before the Inland Empire league starts it's second. San Gabriel Valley is also in preparation to open up very soon to serve the women in the SGV/ East Los Angeles area.

The Women's Fastpitch Softball Association leagues are popping up all across the country right now. Maybe even in your area! We have dates set and seasons beginning in the following locations:

Speaking as a woman who grew up with softball being the main focus of my existence, I felt like there was a huge void left, where a softball once was, after I finished playing college ball. The only option for women after college (unless you go on to play professionally, of course) is slow pitch. In my opinion, slow just cannot compare to the rush I get on the field while playing real softball.

I couldn't find anywhere to play fastpitch until I found the Women's Fastpitch Softball Association. AJ Fugita, Director of the WFSA, graciously gave me the tools and the support to start my own league right here in my area. After that went well, we decided I should start another in the Orange County area.

The best part of this story is that you can do the same thing I've done in your very own hometown. Being the President of this Inland Empire Women's Fastpitch league has been so rewarding. I really just wanted a place to play, initially. It has blossomed into so much more since then; I cannot describe how incredibly wonderful it feels to be a part of something so important to so many women.

I can't count how many women have contacted me overjoyed with their discovery in finding our league. It's been a whole new "level of awesome" having our children root us on from the stands. And personally, it's been an incredible experience being able to allow my husband to see a side of me he'd never seen before. A side that has passion for this sport; a side that is more than just the woman he married and the mother he knows. He gets to see me, doing what I love to do most, out on that field every Sunday.

While leagues will be the foundation of the WFSA, they also are offering three tournaments in 2011, to help promote and grow the association. The WFSA plans to have tournaments in Las Vegas (Memorial Day), Denver (4th of July) and Phoenix (early October), to give teams additional playing opportunities.
