You will need different types of fastpitch softballs for practice. For indoor practice, there are Incrediballs which will save the wooden gym floors and are usually a requirement of the people you are renting the gym from. Various size wiffle balls, as demonstrated on the hitting drills pages. Big ones, normal size and golf ball size are all used in a variety of colors. Of course, if you have a softball pitching machine, you will also need balls for it. Most use the dimple ball variety. Note that the dimple balls were very hard on the aluminum bats, but the sweet spot of a composite bat breaks in quicker when using the dimple balls. Just be careful not to deaden the bat and have a supply of practice machine bats for the dimple balls.
You will also find the heavy balls for pitching practice. They use to be very popular until pitchers started to have shoulder problems after over doing it. I would be very cautious going in that direction.
