Slap Hitters
by: Coach Dan

Ellie,

That is a technique known as slap hitting. It is usually your very fast runners who will do that. The idea is that by getting a running start, they will leg out a hit anywhere in the infield before being thrown out at first since it is only 60' to first base. Please note that most slap hitters will start further back in the batters box. If they hit the ball when out of the batters box, they are automatically out. Slap hitting requires precision and timing, which requires a lot of practice. The overall idea is to get runners on base to start putting pressure on the fielders and pitcher.

Thank you for your question,

Dan
