Middle school coach

I have a roster of 16-18 girls this year. What are the basic substitution rules? ARe there a minimum number of at bats or outs they must play? If they dont get to hit but play a total of 6 defensive outs is that ok?

I didn't have this problem last year as I only had 10 players so please give me any info you might have so that all girls get legal playing time.

Hi Coach,

Thank you for your email. To be honest, I am not the right person to answer this question, because it will vary league by league. The best thing you can do is speak to the Commissioner of your league or to the athletic director at your school. They should be able to tell you any playing time stipulations that may exist.

Keeping 16 - 18 players is a lot of players to keep happy. Your better players will want to play more thinking they will be more likely to help you win. The players (and more likely the parents), of girls 12 - 18 on your bench will want equal playing time. After all, they are practicing every day.

I would first get the rules from the athletic director or league commissioner and then set expectations for all 16 - 18 girls accordingly. If you do not do this upfront, you will have many battles throughout the season which will only be a distraction.

Best of luck with your season!

Kind regards,
Dan
