Slap Hitting

by Len Mumma

My daughter is a lefty slapper with above average speed. She has progressed to where she has had success the past 2 years. She made a new travel team last fall and the coach had her hit away all fall he said he wants her to learn to hit away harder. One slap instructor told me that a slapper's hit away is her hard slap. This coach has her drag bunting or hitting away starting our summer tournaments. Kirsten asked the coach again if she can slap hit and he said no I want you to learn to hit away harder. This has confused Kirsten and is throwing her off at the plate. She had more extra base hits in 10th grade with more RBI's and less strikeouts than in 9th. Since we go to showcase tournaments is it wrong for me to ask the coach to let her slap and see what she can do, Hitting away is not working and Kirsten is getting frustrated! What do I do and how should I handle this?

This summer is a spring board into her junior year. On her profile it says lefty slapper and now coaches will come to games and wonder what is up?

Home to first she is 2.9 and home to home 12 seconds.

Please advise. I don't want to waste another tournament.

Frustrated Dad.

Slapping vs. Swinging Away
by: Coach Dan

Frustrated Dad,

It is sad that it has gotten to this state. I am sure when Kristen tried out and made the team,it was with her slap hitting. I do not know what your relationship is with the coach, but perhaps ask Kristen to have a private conversation with him first explaining why she prefers to slap hit and the success she has had. If this does not work, then perhaps you should intervene. The issue is whether the coach is open to such a discussion.

This conversation should have been had in the Fall when there would have been time to find a team that would have accepted her as slapper as it is too late to change now.

Coach Dan
