Assistant Coach

Hi: If a runner is on first base with less than two outs and a ball is hit to the second baseman can the runner go back to first base to avoid a tag and a double play?

Force Play
by: Dan

Hi Coach,

As the force play is on, unless the force is taken off, by tagging first base first, I am not sure how the runner can go back. Don't forget, that all that has to be done by the fielding team is to touch second base if the force play is still on. So, even if they touch first base first, the runner should be running hard to second and I do not know how she gets back.

Good luck with your season,
Dan

Avoiding Double Play
by: Assistant Softball Coach

Hi: I was not as clear on my question as I should have been. The runner at first base is trying to avoid being tagged by the second baseman who has fielded a hard hit ground ball and is waiting for the runner in the base path. If the runner runs into the tag then the ball is thrown to first for an easy double play. I believe the runner can move back to first and if the ball is thrown to first can reclaim the bag and not be doubled off. Is this correct?

Force Play Taken Off?
by: Dan

If the runner going to second stops, did the second baseman throw to first and got batter out and then they tried to get the runner going to second in a run down? The force at second would have to be taken off for this to work.
