Baserunning through 1st

Sent my twins to the local high school camp. During baserunning they were told that the batter runner must run through first and always turn right or they would be out. My understanding is that the batter runner can turn left after hitting first, and can return to the bag as long as they make no deliberate motion to 2nd. Same as turning right. Why do we keep teaching them to turn right? In college we specifically turned left so as not to commit to only 1st.

Baserunning through first

Thank you for your question. If the ball is hit in the infield (and sometimes to right field where there is a play at first), most coaches will have the batter/runner turn left for maximum speed to beat the throw to first. If the ball is hit to the outfield or a place where there is no play at first, then the batter/runner should turn left to be alert for a possible advancement to second.

Best of luck to your daughters this season!

Kind regards,
