I pitched for many years and found that the best way to throw and effective drop was the "pinch" that old-timers used to talk about. You hold the ball almost like a rise ball, with a tucked finger, but snap the ball off with a pinching rotary motion of your hand and thumb, coming up the back of the ball hard with your fingers. The feeling is of coming slightly "over the top" of the ball as you throw it. Everyone is different, but I think this method is easier and maintains velocity better than the peel or roll-over methods that I've seen. Just my two cents worth.
