Head Coach

by New Girl

I am new to this... I was a very active girl and played many sports including slow pitch softball. I was on traveling teams etc.... However my daughter of 10 finally decided that she wanted to play softball. The county sent out an email requesting coaches, and I decided to say that I would love to help. Whenever I got to the evaluations I asked to be head coach and I wasn't expecting that at all. ( I believe because of the number of girls that enrolled). I am very nervous but yet very excited regarding the opportunity if this adventure. Do you have any advise?

Coaching 10U
by: Dan

New Girl,

First, let me say, thank you for taking on this responsibility. It is important that people are willing to give of their time to pass the game along. You will get back much more than you give if you put your heart into it.

Now, this may be a bit controversial, but at 10U, it should be about fundamentals and making it fun. Wins and losses are at best secondary. Here is why. For most players, this may be only their second year playing at most. In may cases, it may be the first year. Attention span is not extensive. You want to find ways to keep players engaged throughout your practices. Everyone should paly equally in most every position so they learn various aspects of the game. Your practices should be about the three fundamentals: Hitting, fielding (and if the league allows players to pitch), pitching.

You have a leg up on most of the other coaches because you played softball rather than the dads that played baseball and you are a woman, so the players will identify with you. This is a big deal.

Finally, you must set expectations of what you will be doing with the players' parents. Let them know that here are your goals and expectations. Call a parents meeting early. Find out who is willing to help out. Make sure they know this is not a babysitting service. And most importantly, let them know that you are here to teach the girls. Their daughters should be here to learn. If that is established, winning and losing will take care of itself.

Good luck coach! I hope to hear how things go through your season.
